The Myocutaneous Flap

Abstract

|
The myocutaneous is one of the decade¢¥s major breakthrough in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The myocutaneous flap is a unit of skin and muscle that is transferred by means of a dominant vascular pedicle to a nearby defect. The dominant vascular pedicle supplies the muscle with an axial blood supply to the overlying skin. The resultant myocutaneous unit has a remarkable flexibility. The arc of rotation is wide. The skin can be detatched and transferred as a free flap by means of microvascular anastomosis; the muscle portion of the free flap can even be reinnervated by performing a nerve anastomosis at the recipient site. 13 cases of various myocutaneous flaps, including 2 free flaps using microvascular anastomosis were presented.
The results in most instances were satisfactory and acceptable.
